SEEDS OF LIFE #4, THE TEMPLE HOUSE, CHENGDU

November 7. 2019 - January 3. 2020

At the entrance of the Temple House the visitors are welcomed by three magical Videoplanets hovering over the alley. Next to the trees, these works are dedicated to the Element Wood. The legendary staircase is transformed with a large floating sphere that is manifesting the Element Metal. A two-chancel video-composition of the Element Fire is glowing on two Videoplanets outdoors in the Jing Bar. Downstairs at the Sunken Restaurant the Waterplanet is reflected in the beautiful stone water, next to the water lilies and hovering in the corner, and also seen from the pool and upstairs. The gallery space inside the ancient temple architecture features a show of Katja Loher and one piece of Wu Hao. The local Ink painter, who has been invited for the 4th collaboration of encounters across cultures.

Wu Hao’s dream-like compositions combine the methods and visual elements of classical Chinese ‘Gongbi’ (fine-line) painting with contemporary aesthetics and humour. Described by fellow artist Yang Zhongliang as simple and straightforward, Wu is careful with details but not bound to realism. In his imagined worlds, our usual everyday stories are rendered with magically surreal elements and romantic use of colour that reflects his deep concern for humanity. Wu created a Drawing-sculpture to echo with Katja’s heavenly Video-sculptures, exhibited in the gallery space.

On her previous visit Loher captured the artist’s brush strokes, and the process of his creation of five drawings inspired by the five elements. These sequences are collaged into Loher’s video-compositions, that include a collaborative component from each chapter of of this journey of the House Collective’s 2019 Art Program.
